Carl served from 1981 to 1987. “Generations of my family served — uncles, great uncles — it was a family tradition,” he said when asked why he wanted to serve his country. He saw a lot of the world during his time in the Navy. When he got out in 1987 he married, had children and took a job at Sherwin-Williams. “I worked, took care of my family and my kids and never put myself first,” he shared.
That was until his wife, Maelynn, saw the the television commercial about the Veteran’s Day Smile Make-Over that Westermeier-Martin was offering and urged him to apply.
“I’ve had health and teeth issues, had dentures and just thought I’d have to keep walking around with whatever (bad teeth) I have,” Carl said. “I never thought I’d win and I am just ecstatic. I can look in the mirror and see someone who isn’t looking and feeling miserable.”
Carl said he grew a beard and moustache as a way to “hide” his smile. “My bad teeth impacted my life and my attitude,” he said.
In his role as a town supervisor in East Bethany, Carl is in front of the public on a regular basis and knew he needed to find a way to fix his smile and his being chosen by Westermeier-Martin Dental Care as a winner, will help him do just that.
“I do a lot of public speaking and it was embarrassing,” he said. Carl speaks in his role as supervisor and also in the classes he teaches for the Department of Environmental Conservation on gun safety and hunting education. “Now I can feel happy volunteering to speak again.”
When asked about his experience at Westermeier-Martin Dental Care, Carl said, “They are always happy to see me. They make me feel welcome. It’s like no place I’ve ever been before.”
Once Carl has completed his dental care plan we will be posting before and after photos so you can see the power of a smile that you’re proud to share.
