Why Do I Need Dental Check-ups?
An attractive, white, bright smile are only a couple of the reasons you need to be diligent in visiting your dentist twice a year. Poor oral hygiene leads to a myriad of dental and medical issues including:
Having regular dental check-ups and cleanings help assure good dental health. The dentists and dental hygienists at Westermeier Martin Dental Care also urge you to brush and floss regularly – at least twice daily.
Here are a few more reasons:
To detect oral cancer. Did you know someone dies of oral cancer every hour of every day? The Oral Cancer Foundation says dental check-ups are the best line of defense. When a patient is in our dental chair, we are cleaning and checking their teeth, and screening for oral cancer. This is a highly curable and treatable cancer if caught early.
To prevent gum disease. What is gum disease? An infection in the tissues of your gums and in your jaw bones. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. If your dentist catches it early, gum disease can be treated and the damage reversed. Neglecting gum disease can lead to an advanced stage of gum disease called periodontitis which leads to sore, achy and bleeding gums. Regular dental visits and regular flossing and brushing are key factors in preventing gum disease.
To help with your physical health. There have been studies recently that have shown links between strokes and heart attacks and gum disease because of poor oral health. Having a dental cleaning every six months helps keep your teeth and gums healthy and could even reduce your risk of strokes or heart disease.
To prevent tooth loss. Regular dental check-ups, brushing, flossing and dental cleaning are crucial to keeping your teeth. When you keep your teeth, you can chew better, have better health and won’t suffer bone loss in your jaw. Patients who have lost their teeth can have them replaced with dental implants by the dentists at Westermeier Martin Dental Care, but we prefer our patients to keep their own teeth, if possible! Also, losing teeth can compromise your ability to chew and enjoy food and this becomes very important as we age and need to take in nutrients to remain healthy, active and strong.
Preventative care is best. When you’re in the dental chair, your hygienist and dentist can detect early warning signs of potential dental health issues with your teeth and gums. Early detection will find cavities, broken fillings and the beginnings of gum disease. If dental problems are left untreated you could be facing tooth removal, gum surgery and/or root canal.
To create a dental treatment plan. If you haven’t visited a dentist in a while and are worried about the amount of dental care you’re facing, work with us to formulate a dental treatment plan that suits your dental, as well as your financial needs. A dental treatment plan is a comprehensive overview of what your dentist recommends to help you attain oral health. The treatment plan is broken down in order of priority to make it manageable for you to get back to oral health by managing your treatments at your comfort level. Your treatment plan is unique to you and allows you to discuss financial arrangements for your dental care and schedule your upcoming appointments.
