When our patients first call our office, one of the first questions they ask is, “How painful are dental implants and the dental implant procedure? ” The answer is that it is different for every patient based on what is going on in his or her mouth. However, we offer five levels of sedation for our patients that can virtually guarantee a painless, stress-free procedure.
We understanding that pain and fear is a real concern with any dental procedure, not just dental implants. Because we are aware of this, we take steps, from the very first phone call, to understand a patients’ level of concern about pain and about their fear level of dentistry in general.
What goes into a dental implant procedure?
Patients who have chosen to undergo a dental implant procedure will likely experience some discomfort once the procedure is over and they are in the recovery phase. The dental implant procedure involves:
The staff at Westermeier-Martin Dental Care work with our patients to assure that the dental implant procedure goes smoothly, both during and after. We provide pain medication for use after the patient goes home, but truthfully, many of our patients tell us they don’t even need to take the pain medication.
Is anesthesia used?
Local numbing anesthesia is always used for the dental implant procedure. The decision to be sedated is the patient’s choice, and we will thoroughly explain every option so you can rest assured you will be comfortable during the entire process. If you decide you would prefer sedation dentistry, you will need a ride to and from the procedure – depending on the level of sedation you’ve chosen.
Many patients will choose sedation simply because the procedure can take a bit of time and it can be uncomfortable for them to keep their mouths open for so long. Some patients may not like the feeling of the pressure of the process and they might simply not want to hear any of the sounds of dentistry. In our office we do provide headphones, if you’d like them. We have a television that can be tuned to your favorite show so you can watch while we perform your dental implants. We also have a massage therapist on staff to help you with relaxation during the procedure.
What level of pain I will experience?
The pain or discomfort that any one patient experiences depends as much on the patient’s pain threshold as it does the extent of work that’s needed and the condition of the teeth and gums prior to the procedure. It is difficult to determine what your potential level of pain or discomfort will be and that is why we provide you with a prescription for pain medication if necessary.
While we wish we could say, “there will be no pain or discomfort with your dental implant procedure,” that is not a promise that any dentist in Buffalo, New York could make. What we try to do at Westermeier-Martin Dental Care is to talk with you prior to the procedure, understand your hopes for the final outcome as well as your fears. We will work with you to do all that we can to alleviate your fears and to make your procedure as pain-free as possible.
What can I do to help minimize any potential for pain following my dental implant procedure?
How long will recovery take?
Plan on the swelling in your mouth to be gone in five days or fewer. The pain should have abated in fewer than ten days. These recovery times are averages, but if you find you experience pain or swelling or anything that concerns you, make certain you call our office and let us know. Our main objective is to get you a smile that you’ll be proud of in as pain-free a process as possible.
