Though we may love our treats, there are many foods commonly eaten that can wreak havoc on our teeth and gums, from chipped and cracked teeth to cavities and the breakdown of enamel. In the following piece, we will breakdown several foods that can have the most negative impact on your mouth
What?! Yes, many people have that reaction. We’re all told that fruits are healthy, so what is this all about? They are still healthy, many with high levels of Vitamin C, but you need to be careful as the acidity of these fruits can erode tooth enamel. Lemons and grapefruit are particularly acidic while orange juice is one of the least acidic citrus fruit products. To protect your teeth, brush your teeth or at least rinse out your mouth after consuming anything containing citrus.
2. Sticky Food
From dried fruit to caramel candies, sticky food can seriously damage your teeth. The problem is that they stick to your teeth long after you’ve finished eating, which means that the bacteria in your mouth is burning the sugar to create acid, which, like noted above, causes the breakdown of your enamel. If you consume any sticky food, you should brush, floss, and rinse afterwards. Extremely sticky candies could also impact fillings, crowns, etc., so if you have any of those, you should be especially careful.
Popcorn is a tasty snack and nutritionally pretty healthy, but it can be dangerous for your teeth for several reasons. The first is because popcorn creates lactic acid, which hurts your tooth enamel. The second is that husks can get stuck in between your teeth or even your gums, the latter of which can even cause an abscess! And, though many of us like crunching down on them, the unpopped kernels can crack or break your tooth! Make sure to brush and floss after consuming popcorn and don’t bite down on those kernels!
4. Tea and Coffee
Yes, that yummy goodness that perks you up every morning may be damaging your teeth. Both tea and coffee have the potential to stain your teeth. And we often dump in some sugar, which can cause erosion of your enamel. We don’t expect everyone to stop drinking their morning brews, so make sure you brush your teeth afterwards.
This probably doesn’t surprise anyone, but what if we told you this also includes diet soda? Regular soda is high in sugar, which isn’t good for tooth enamel, but both regular and diet soda contain acid that can eat away at your teeth as well as having coloring that can stain your teeth. However, don’t brush your teeth immediately after consuming – surprisingly, this can actually speed up decay!
